Spending six years studying Art, Product and Furniture Design led me to the conclusion that as much as I like sculpture and painting I love it when people can fully interact with my art, not just stare at it in a gallery but feel the ergonomics against their skin, appreciate the devious ways it achieves its tasks and fall in love with its curves and colors while its waiting to be used again and again.
Growing up in the English countryside I learnt from a young age that swaying towards yes rather than no is the best way to live your life. It has led me on some crazy adventures, through some spectacular countries.
Along the way I have always had Design, woodworking and Cabinet making with me as a skill to fall back on, I used those skills far more than I ever imagined I would. It opened lots of doors for me and often dictated my path.
It gave me the opportunity to really put my skills to the test, creating large units in foreign lands means you have to be very resourceful, create contacts and source materials in areas where you know nobody, along with making any tools and space that you have, work for you.
As an apprentice at Eximious Bespoke Furniture (https://eximiousfurniture.co.uk) in Leicester England I developed the ability to make every joint and surface flawless as possible.
In Australia I found myself doing lots of woodworking and cabinetry on boats which gave me a true appreciation for the spirit level, square, resilient materials and space efficiency.
Canada is where I first discovered the art of working with reclaimed material, you’re not so much making a new piece of furniture but rather sculpting the old into the new, breathing life into materials that are already riddled with character and history.
